Welcome to the Wallowa Avalanche Center on the web. We provide the winter backcountry traveler with tools to make an informed decision about winter travel in Northeast Oregon. The Wallowa Mountains contain outstanding opportunities for backcountry skiing and snowmobiling. Currently no official avalanche advisory, forecast, or prediction covers the Wallowa Mountains. Nothing on this site should be construed as a forecast, advisory or prediction. Wallowa Avalanche Center provides resources for individuals to make their own decisions. Our goals for the future include a local advisory and we appreciate your support toward this goal.

Please check back soon as we update our course listings. For a complete description of avalanche courses please visit the Education page at avalanche.org.

WAC provides invaluable training for free to any interested community members.  February 21st, 2010, 7 winter enthusiasts and members of Wallowa County Search and Rescue joined WAC for a full day of Avalanche Search and Rescue training.  Ken Bronec from WAC organized this educational opportunity with help from Paul Arentsen and Jerry Hustafa.  The day was a great success with everyone learning and practicing the skills needed to perform an effective search for a victim buried in an avalanche.  Everyone left the days training feeling more confident in using the 3 necessary avalanche rescue tools Transceiver, Shovel and Probe.  They all commented on the importance of actually practicing with these tools.  They are almost useless to carry without annual training and practice.  Get out there and practice using these tools and keep an eye out for next seasons training day. Hope to see you out in the mountains.
